The Writer’s Journal Book Basket provides ‘self-publishing’ authors with free publicity and they certainly need it. Most people have no idea how much big business makes from authors and how little authors receive.

In addition to publishing book release publicity material and purchase links here at Kingscalendar, I also help authors promote their books by providing a “No Charge – No Pay” service in which I invite authors to write ‘stand-alone’ articles (meaning not something specifically designed to advertise their book), which readers might find interesting. Authors can write about something that interests them, in 600 or more words. I will publish the article along with the book cover photo, author bio and purchase details. I try always to use the purchase page link to the original publisher – not the online bookstores. Here are some examples.

I am extremely grateful to all of those authors who took advantage of this offer in 2014 and 2015 at Magic City. Both sites are looking for more writers and book reviewers. If you would like to join our team just send an email to me at the address below.

“Political Straight Talk:
A Prescription for Healing Our Broken System of Government”

By H. John Lyke

Political Straight Talk By H. John LykeDENVER – In the heat of perhaps the most divisive election year in American history, the future of the United States remains a mystery. The conversation is dominated by talking heads and tweets endlessly analyzing the potential outcomes, but in the constant madness of the 24-hour news cycle, it’s easy to forget about the voices that truly shaped the nation: those belonging to the Founding Fathers.

H. John Lyke believes the time has come for Americans to remember the ideas and principles that created this country. In his new book, “Political Straight Talk: A Prescription for Healing Our Broken System of Government,” Lyke explores the ways the federal government has changed over time and offers simple, viable solutions for getting the United States back to being the country George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and others envisioned.

Lyke draws from his decades of experience as a psychologist to analyze the wellbeing of the country and suggest methods for improvement. “The principles that guide us in living happy and productive lives are the same whether we’re talking about our personal lives or the political growth of our nation,” Lyke said. “The need for personal and public integrity, empathy, and being other-centered is as true for the national psyche as it is for individuals.”

H. John Lyke, Ph.D., earned his master’s degree in clinical psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia and his doctorate at Michigan State University. He is a board-certified psychologist and professor emeritus at Metropolitan State College of Denver, and was a clinical psychology consultant for a residential treatment center for children in Denver for many years. He has written the political psychology books The Impotent Giant: How to Reclaim the Moral High Ground of America’s Politics and What Would Our Founding Fathers Say: How Our Leaders Have Lost Their Way He also co-authored a psychology self-help book, Walking on Air without Stumbling. He currently resides in Denver. For more information, visit http://www.lykeablebooks4u.com/.

“Portal to Erytheum”
By Robert B. Goos

Portal to Erytheum By Robert B. GoosCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Post-traumatic stress disorder is a fact of life for many veterans who serve during wartime. Unfortunately, many of these veterans are not receiving the treatment they need. Robert B. Goos, MD, has spent nearly 10 years as a psychiatrist with the Veterans Healthcare Administration. His experience left him frustrated with the lack of care for the nation’s warriors. With that in mind, he wrote his new science fiction novel, “Portal to Erytheum,” as an allegory for the agony trauma leaves in its wake and potential alternative healing options.

“Post-traumatic stress disorder is not just a mental issue or a physical issue – it’s a spiritual issue, a wound to the soul,” Goos said. “It derails the lives of its victims. This book is about helping them live, even love again.”

Goos believes the VA, in its current iteration, is incapable of treating veterans with the resources necessary for healing. He hopes readers will see his book as a wake-up call.

Robert B. Goos, a psychiatrist, worked with the Veterans Healthcare Administration for nearly a decade before moving into private practice. He specializes in treating veterans, particularly those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He currently resides in Colorado City, Colo. “Shades of Africa”
By Toko Loshe

Shades of Africa By Toko LosheSYDNEY – South African history is dominated by memories of Nelson Mandela and the end of apartheid. Few remember the violence and horror that engulfed the country in the decades leading up to the national reconciliation of the 1990s. Toko Loshe remembers. Loshe, along with the rest of her family, lived in South Africa during some of the most turbulent years in the country’s history. Born in 1944, Loshe experienced racism, political unrest, violence, and social upheaval as South Africa’s divisions grew deeper. Her new book, “Shades of Africa,” is an intensely personal account of the dangerous world in which she lived.

“Domestic violence and abuse of women and children was a normal way of life for many families,” Loshe said. “Raging emotions and violence were left unchecked.”

Although the events described in the novel took place years ago, Loshe sees many similar issues in today’s world. Violence and inequality continue to plague people all over the globe.

Toko Loshe was born in South Africa on January 1944. The family moved to Southern Rhodesia then Northern Rhodesia during the years that those countries were fighting for freedom and independence. Caught up in the violence and terror that evolved and the Congo Revolution spillover, they returned to South Africa the day before Zambia’s independence. Toko now lives in Sydney, Australia, with her husband, four married children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. For more information, visit http://www.shadesofafricabytokoloshe.com/.

“Testosterone Resistance:
Fighting for the Men’s Health Hormone”
By Malcolm Carruthers, MD

Testosterone Resistance By Malcolm Carruthers, MDLONDON – Over the course of his more than 30 years in the medical field, Carruthers has treated thousands of men suffering from testosterone-related health issues. Testosterone deficiency is most commonly linked to a man’s sex life, but it can also contribute to more serious medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart and circulatory disorders, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Many men experiencing symptoms of testosterone deficiency test with seemingly normal levels of testosterone, leaving them with unanswered questions and untreated problems. Carruthers hopes to change that with his new book, “Testosterone Resistance: Fighting for the Men’s Health Hormone.” Carruthers, a pioneer in the field of testosterone research, explains his theory of “testosterone resistance,” noting the hormone’s similarity to insulin in adult onset diabetes.

“This is a game changer – millions of men worldwide are being denied treatment which could restore them to full health safely, economically, and easily” says Carruthers. He argues that testosterone replacement therapy has the potential to be the most effective form of preventive medicine of the twenty-first century, but medical professionals and patients alike need to wake up to the new possibilities for treating symptoms of testosterone deficiency.

Malcolm Carruthers, MD, is the founder and chief medical consultant of the Centre for Men’s Health. He is a global authority on testosterone deficiency. Carruthers has published more than 120 referred papers in medical journals around the world and authored eight other books, including “The Testosterone Revolution” (Thorson’s/HarperCollins) and “ADAM: Androgen Deficiency in the Adult Male – Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment” (Taylor & Francis). Carruthers is also an adjunct professor in the Alzheimer’s and Aging Department at Edith Cowan University in western Australia. For more information, visit http://www.testosteroneresistance.com/

“The Smallest Spark”
By John Wright

The Smallest Spark By John WrightAUGUSTA, Ga. – Thérèse Martin was like so many other teenage girls, until she felt a deeper calling push her towards a life of spiritual sanctity. She lived a relatively spoiled life in nineteenth century France until Thérèse, despite heavy opposition, became a nun at age 15 and dedicated herself to the simplicity of service. After passing away at the age of 24, she was canonized, almost by popular demand, and is now regarded as the greatest saint of modern times.

John Wright was unaware of all of this when he picked up Thérèse’s autobiography, “Story of a Soul,” a few years ago. However, he found himself inspired by her writings. After further study of her life, he decided to bring her story to a modern audience. His new book, “The Smallest Spark,” is the result – a creative retelling of the life of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

“Thérèse has made an impact on many unsuspecting people, including myself,” Wright said. “Her story, though now over a century old, speaks to my life, as it has so many others.”

Thérèse became known for her “little way” of living life. She consistently made use of the simplest acts of love throughout her service to others – a smile, a gentle response, an extra dose of patience. She persevered in these practices even when she experienced tremendous suffering from a terminal illness that took its toll for more than a year before she finally passed.

“Thérèse was not a flowery, childish individual, despite her young age,” Wright said. “She was a self-emptying woman of spiritual steel. “Her life is worth getting to know regardless of one’s background.”

Father John Wright is a Catholic priest living in Augusta, Ga. For more information see https://authorjohnwright.wordpress.com/

“Tournament of Shadows”
By Michael Hyman and Andrew Capon

Tournament of Shadows By Michael Hyman and Andrew CaponTORONTO – Modern warfare is constantly evolving. National security focuses primarily on preventing terrorist attacks and maintaining a strong, secure cyber network. Economic security is typically an afterthought to the general public, but the destabilization of global markets could be more devastating than any physical or digital attack the world has ever seen. Few people understand this better than Michael Hyman and Andrew Capon, with over 50 years of experience in market analysis between them. Their new novel, “Tournament of Shadows,” is a unique financial thriller that demonstrates the latent danger of a potential economic collapse.

While the book concerns itself with a fictional story about a conspiracy to cripple the U.S., Hyman and Capon found inspiration for the plot in both history and current events.

“The U.S. is financially and economically over-extended,” Hyman said. “Nearly every great empire throughout history has fallen at least partly as a result of economic over-extension. If the U.S. doesn’t do something about it soon, it may be too late.”

Michael Hyman cut his teeth in the London markets of the 1980s and ‘90s after completing his post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics. He is the founder of several financial start-up firms, including GH Asset Management Ltd., a global fixed income boutique in London. He is the author of the books The Power of Global Capital: New International Rules-New Global Risks and New Ways for Managing Global Financial Risks – The Next Generation. Andrew Capon is Head of Strategic Communications at Insight Investment, the United Kingdom’s biggest active fund manager. He has twenty years of experience in financial markets as a senior investment analyst, strategist, and award-winning journalist. For more information, visit http://www.tournamentofshadowsnovel.com/.

“Traitors from Inside Out”
By M.M. Justine

Traitors from Inside Out By M.M. JustineSTOCKHOLM – The medical industry is full of labyrinthine rules, codes, and protocols – from the intricacies of health insurance, to pharmaceutical regulations, to the opaque nature of the research and development of new medicines, it’s nearly impossible to develop a thorough understanding of even one aspect of the healthcare industry. All of this confusion provides ample opportunity for corner cutting, improper conduct, and worse.

M.M. Justine traveled the world in hopes of gaining a deeper sense of what makes the best, most effective healthcare systems in the world. Instead, she found the stuff of nightmares – a general deterioration of services across the globe. Justine’s observations inspired her new medical thriller, “Traitors from Inside Out” – a tale of corruption and conspiracy that may change humanity as we know it.

Justine’s research and travels have opened her eyes to the possibilities of alternative medicine and encouraged her to seek out natural products, as opposed to the latest and greatest technological advances. “Unfortunately, much of my book was inspired by real-life events,” Justine said. “Too many corporations and governments are taking advantage of people, and too few individuals are thinking for themselves.”

M.M.Justine has travelled widely; she has lived, studied and worked on four continents. Wherever she has been, she has observed the same waste and deterioration in wellness and healthcare services across continents. Justine currently resides in Sweden with her husband and two children. For more information, visit http://www.mmjustine.com/.
